Tips for the week of 12/30/13 – 1/5/14
Music is made up of sound and silence. Use both in your improvised solos.
Don’t wait around for something to “click”… work on it until it does.
Playing music takes a lot of time, effort, and tenacity. There’s no shortcut. Just keep working at it.
“Play” what you know. “Practice” what you don’t know.
Be your own teacher. Listen to what you’re playing and how you’re playing it and find ways to make it better.
Practice all the different intervals that you can create using a scale so you know what they sound like and can execute them.
Compose a song/exercise using the concept (scale, key, range, etc) that you’re currently working on to help reinforce it.
